Summer Art 2024
Figure drawing by Marlo, age 13
I have a shortened summer for teaching this year in order to devote time to an upcoming solo exhibit in 2025 so unfortunately my offerings are limited. I had hoped to offer some adult classes and some for older teens, but all of my programs will be devoted to portfolio prep.
These intensives are good for any tween or teen who loves to draw and wants to hone their drawing skills. See below.

Artists will learn how to draw the human figure - the most important piece in some art high school portfolios. In the LaGuardia High School Audition rubric this piece is worth 45 points. Learning proportion is fundamental to drawing the human figure. Artists will learn how to layer drawings and find proportions using large basic shapes as a way to compare the size and shape of one part of the body to another. They will learn about drawing facial features and placing them on a “map” of the face. They will work from photographs and from life. They will learn how to fully render and shade with details, light and shadow. I cannot promise that they will complete their pieces, but most artists do.

Artists will learn how to draw a still life and create one of the most important pieces in some art high school portfolios: Fantastical Sandwiches. In the LaGuardia High School Audition rubric this piece is worth 35 points. We will look at fantastical and surreal art and discuss what makes it different from realism. They will draw objects from life and explore subjects and imagery that inspire them, learn to thumbnail ideas, and learn about composition, foreground / background, design and create inventive compositions that draw the viewer in. We may visit the Brooklyn Museum or another museum to look at fantastical art and still life drawing in IRL. I cannot promise that they will complete their pieces, but most artists do.
